Born in Berlin, Erwin Blumenfeld moved to the Netherlands and then to France where, after his talent as an avant-garde artist was recognized, he published his first photographs in the major magazines of the time. Blumenfeld's life and work followed the ups and downs of European history until he managed to flee the war for America in 1941. It was in New York that he became one of the most influential fashion photographers of his generation.
